Roger Ailes, Who Built Fox News Into an Empire, Dies at 77

Roger Ailes, the ousted chief of Fox News who built the network into a conservative empire and became a kingmaker for the Republican Party before being pushed out last summer, died on Thursday, according to a statement from his wife, Elizabeth Ailes, that was published by Fox News. Fox News confirmed his death in an on-air report.

“I am profoundly sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes, passed away this morning,” Ms. Ailes wrote in the statement, which was also published by the Drudge Report. “Roger was a loving husband to me, to his son Zachary, and a loyal friend to many.”

Mr. Ailes, 77, founded the network in the mid-1990s, billing it as a “fair and balanced” alternative to his competitors.
